P6/M3/D2 - Steps towards Editing
I started by choosing the clips i wanted to use and as I went through them I realised that the quality of footage lacked lighting. This became a proplem as I couldn't see the clip clear enough to see what was actually happening, linking audio would be had and I also didnt have enough time to go back to my location and re film everything.
I desided to increase the brightness and the contrast with each clip being the same as then they all still fit together as one film. Ayou can s to the left they are both the same image but the one on the right has had the added effect.
I then put the clips in a rough order that I planned to use in my script. This also means creating gaps for dramtic black outs so just the audio can be heard.
Then it was time to link the important Spoken Word audio diologue to the video already in place. As i continued with cropping and changing I decided to leave a gap at the begging to create tenstion but also use other sound effects to set the scene up for the spoken word, creating an atmosphere towards the audiecne. In the beggining there was a lot of background noise, to stop this I cut up the audio to create pauses and added cross-disolved so the audio flowed together.
Next it was time to add music. Now music helps create an atmosphere for the film however, I dont want it to over power the spoken word as that is the most important audio that needs to be heard. The music is 'The Power Of Love' which is played on the piano with no singing meaning the words of the song wont over lap the diolgue. The Song was placed in to beginning with to see how it fitted together. Then it was editted to fit into the gaps. Words like nothing made the music stop as the emptiness of nothing happening is what the audience needs to feel as though there is nothing to help this person on screen.
After all that I thought it would be a good idea to add gradual loud volume from the music to create a tense atmosphere and keep the audience engaged. Using constand power transitions and markers to move the volume up and down, it helped creature texture to the peice but also convey different effects such as dramtic events or quiet thoughts.
As I continued i started to realise that i didnt have enough footage to fill every idea I wanted to convey to the audience. Also got feedback that I shouldnt over do my blackouts as it is loosign the effect I wanted. I wanted to empathises certain words and fraises that was spoken. These were highlighted with Image titles (Pink). These frasises will stick in the audeince's mind as they take all of the other information in. This also enhances the audio as they can read the words and gatehr their own opinion on whether they agree or not. Adding transitions flows the titles and clips together and fading into another aspect helps with scene changes in the audio.
Adding the sound effects was next. Thiis included Pills, water and even children laughing. Each one adding to the effect and mood of the spoken word. The pills and rope sound effect actually cuts through thr music to create a dramtic sudden change of mood. I wanted the audience to feel as though he is planning to kill himself and that these are all typical sounds we could here every day but to others in sounds like the way out of their life.
Other things like atmospheric sounds of winds and the bathroom at to the atmosphere and the lonliness that comes with it.
The cridits ended the editing prosess. I didnt want the actor to be added at the end as i wanted to present to the audeince this could happen to them or anyone they knew. It ended with the title and the agency to help them remember what the film was about and the last things they see is usually the impotant informmation they remember. I did include the Website where the music was found and used as this is what was asked to do by the music player.
