P3 - Treatment

My treatment reflects the brief we were given.

A documentry video that is a maximum of three minutes to promote our positive activity.

Pre-Production Materials

Behind 999 - The Calls

Due to the Legal and ethical issues regarding my treatment and stories I asked my interviewee before hand the stories they maybe telling me as I could fit my film around them and understand how much detail they are legally allowed to present to me. This is due to the terorist alerts in the UK at the moment and the protexction of officers are seen as an importane.

I asked one question:

"In as much detail as you are allowed legally to give me... What is the most shocking/upsetting call you have ever recived when completing you job as a 999 call reciver?"

They replied with:

"I took a call from a female who was hysterical on the phone. Crying, very upset, so much so that she was unable to explain properly what was happening, as I couldn't understand what she was saying. I then heard a little voice in the background, so I asked for the phone to be passed over. I had been passed over to the females 7 year old daughter. I had to ask her what had happened. She explained how her dad had just assaulted her mum and her baby brother whilst she had watched. I questioned her and she gave me a lot of detail about the family and the on going abuse that her, the mother and the brother had been receiving from the dad. She was very calm and clearly upset but gave a lot of helpful detail. Very upsetting from my point of view to hear these things coming from a young child."

Behind Costa Coffee - The staff

Due to the legal and Ethical issues regarding my treatment and stories I had to gather my facts before exploiting people and the organisation. As I work as an employee I have a job to attend to and respect the company as if I was any other person. I asked questions before the interviews to gather a much bigger understanding of customers rather than just mine and the colgues the same age.

I asked one question:

"Has there ever been a time when you have worked in Costa and the customer hasn't given you as much respect as you have given them?"

They replyed with:

"We have only been open 5 months now and still people thinks we are all well trained, well staffed and well educted even though half of us are still in full time education and are still in n going training. Once you have completed your training you recive a bean which represents the basic common knowlage of this job. When you recive more beans and a better salery you are more than capable that others such as myself and some of my peers. Our busiest day is usually a Sunday as people come out for a sunday drive to Cadbury to get a Costa coffee and look at the animals with their children. THis Sunday was perticually busy as there was 3 young ones and 2 fullly trained adults, this meant everyone was doing two jobs at once and doing anything that needed to be done. Customers were coming in and coffee was going out as fast as we could. I took two pannies out and was about to deliver them when a women in her 30s stopped me and said "This is absoluty rediculous!"

Which I replied with "Excuse me, we are going as fast as we can and we havent been open long. Im sorry that you are waiting but we are doing our best."

She started shouting at me and yelled at me saying "YOU SHOULD BE MAKING COFFEE! NOT WORRY ABOUT ANYTHING ELSE!"

I replied with calmly "I have two hot pannies in my hands and each person is working full pelt and are doing two jobs at once as we are under staff. We have to clean cups so you can drink out of them and clear tables for you to sit down. Devliver food so people can eat and serve you at the tills so you can pay and get the order you want. THEN and only then do we make the coffee. There is more to Costa than just coffee."

I then walked off smiling. This may have been rude but customers who think they know how to complete my job dont deserve a lot of respect. In my opinion.

Legal & Ethical Issues

There is a law – Section 58A of the Terrorism Act 2000 – that says police officers can stop you filming them if they believe that the video will be used for purposes of terrorism. Don’t film/upload anything that the police can use against the police, such as swearing. As my interviewee has not given me permission to film them I am not permitted to upload any film about them. Also eveything I have filmed or will film needs to be presented and showen towards the cheif of police and anyone else before using it as a project film.

Violance And Offensive Language/Behavior

I have to take into consideration the violent language that could of been included in my video. This will not be an issue for my video as it contains under 18s so language should be kept to a minimal, however if I was aware of any violence I would have to insert a Pegi age limit for parental guidance to convey to my audience what the video may entail.

Slander And Liability

This is to make me aware that I am giving away information for an organisation and I have to make sure my sources and what is being said is legit as making false claims can lead to major consequences. This means I will make sure all my facts are true before publishing them.

Budget to consider

As this was an academic film project I did not really need to consider the budget, however somethings I had consider which would be:

  • Overheads - Location is key and getting the right one will cost money. For mine most of the time the location is in a public place so the cost is not a problem.

  • Equipment - Camera's where mine but I had to pay for them to begin with, lights for the camera to show up the models, computers and their software. Also boom microphones are essential in my film.

  • Time - My time is valued and the time I took take photos outside of school and the time it takes me to travel from one location to the next. Also other people’s time and energy, they all have to be paid.

  • Transport - I had to get trains, buses and cars so petrol and tickets needed to be paid for.

  • Model/people - People need to be paid especially the model who stars in my video as he/she needs to make a living

If you film an actor inside a store or restaurant, you need written permission to use the location and also to show the chain’s name or trademark. If you film outside a store or restaurant you do not need permission to show its name or trademark – however, if the location chosen is used to communicate a negative message in your film (for example, a film about ‘poisoned restaurant food’) you may risk legal proceedings. You do not need to ask passers-by for permission to feature their faces in a film. Under UK law, the copyright of film shot in a public place resides with the filmmaker.

Budget to consider

As this was an academic film project I did not really need to consider the budget, however if I were going to construct this as a proper organisation the budget I would consider would be:

  • Overheads - Location is key and getting the right one will cost money. For mine most of the time the location is in a public place but an organisation so I may have to pay to use their facilities as they may loose money as I am taking over part of their resturant.
