Today in Creative Media we were shown a video called ‘Pockets’ directed by John Lees. This is a 3 minute video about people pulling out what they have in their pockets and telling them about why they carry around this object with them all the time.

we picked on 6 main points of how we could separate out this video and what they all mean.

  • Genre - a style or category of art, music, or literature for example Pockets is a Documentary. This can then fit into sub genres like Natural History or History.

  • Form - is the duration of the piece\featured length; in this case 3 minutes - Where is it shown? This can include advertisement on television or posters hung up on posts.

  • Content- This is a huge category which many sub categories fall into. You basically say what you can see in the video: Colours\Gradings, Graphics, Shot types (ECU), Audio\Visuals - Props\Visuals - Dialogue\Music - Sound effects and Location. In Pockets they used “Vox Pop” which is interviews on the general public on the street.

  • Music - Diojetic and Non-Diojetic

  • Style and Meaning - Style is how they used the content to represent something. In Pockets they have a naturalistic style (trying to make it real). The Extreme Close Ups (ECU) Makes the shots up close and personal to the participant and it seems to be beautiful to see the natural beauty of humanity.

  • Juxtaposition - Two images next to each other to create another meaning.

Then we had a go on our own cameras to practise perspective imagery and how to focus on some parts of and image and focus out others. We also learned that the focus has to be adjusted when we go outside because of how much light goes in and out of the camera. Also the rule of thirds as an image can always look better if the object isn't always in the middle, when its on the left or right it keeps more of the ‘no ground’ and helps the focus stay on the object in the foreground.
